Purple River
I hope you’re enjoying your trip down The Purple River. I wrote this story when running rivers in Idaho, California and Oregon. Flipping my boat over in a cold, fast river flow was an exhilarating experience and some of those shivering times are written into the story. This escapade is on the Salmon River, but I had great fun weaving all the other trips into an adventure for Jackson, Jordan, Simon and the whole river crew.
I took my second trip down the Grand Canyon on the Colorado River, while I was in classes in Creative Writing at Sanford University and working on The Purple River. The river guides explained how the canyon was created over millions of years and guess what? It made it into the book floating down the Salmon River. It’s a great joy sharing these stories with you.

On a slow-moving stretch of river, I looked up to see a full-grown bald eagle float onto its nest at the top of the tallest tree. When I wrote the song “The Purple River,” I included that scene into the 3rd verse of the song. That lyric is below. You can hear the song on Spotify for free. Click the Spotify Button above. It’s song #9:
The Purple River crashes down
Into my lovers’ eyes
All I see around me now
Are dark and dreary skies
The eagle laughs a lonely sound
Before she learns to cry
You’ll love listening to the song while you’re reading The Purple River, or after you get to the steamy conclusion.
